Where Do Dental Pit Stains Originate?

Posted on 12/25/2018 by Alyce
Where Do Dental Pit Stains Originate?Almost everyone has dental pit stains. They may not cause any harm, but they can be unsightly enough for some people to want to get rid of them. They are found in the small holes that are typically located on the top surface of a tooth.

Dental pit stains can be divided into two specific categories: they can be extrinsic or they can be intrinsic.

Extrinsic stains

These are caused by outside influences such as:

•  Plaque
•  Things you eat or drink
•  Tobacco
•  Salivary dysfunction
•  Bacteria
•  Medication

Intrinsic stains

These are incorporated within the structure of your tooth. Examples include:

•  Dental restoration
•  Decay
•  Genetic defects
•  Necrotic nerves

Treatment Options

While intrinsic staining requires specialized intervention in a majority of cases, extrinsic staining is more manageable, and some remedies can even be prepared in the comfort of your home.

Professional Tooth Cleaning

Consider booking an appointment with a dentist to have your teeth professionally cleaned. Keeping a regular cleaning schedule will mean that you will have less staining overall.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is another option that can help remove some dental stains. If you take the tip of your toothbrush and dip it into a small amount of baking soda, then wet it with water and brush with it, you can remove some of the surface stains that accumulate on your teeth.

Avoid Smoking

Avoid smoking to minimize exposure of your teeth to cigarette tar which causes staining over time. Any tobacco use will actually stain your teeth, not just cigarette or cigar smoking. You should avoid tobacco for your overall health, not only your oral health. If you need help quitting smoking, reach out to us. We can give you some resources that can help.
