Cavities are a common occurrence in people of all ages. It is estimated that about half of the population will develop at least one cavity during their lifetime. This blog post will discuss what a topical cavity is and how we can treat it.

What is a topical cavity?

A topical cavity is a localized area of tooth decay that occurs on the surface. It can be caused by many factors, including frequent consumption of acidic foods and beverages, teeth grinding or chewing, an illness that reduces one's immunity to infection or injury to the enamel due to traumatic blows. The good news about this type of cavity is it doesn't go very deep into the enamel, so they are usually considered non-symptomatic unless there has been recent trauma from an accident that may have resulted in pain.

Why does a topical cavity happen?

The formation of a topical cavity begins with the outermost layer, called enamel. Enamel is hard and durable but can be weakened by acid erosion from frequent consumption of acidic foods and beverages such as soda pop, fruit juices, or even wine, which have contributed to tooth decay over time. It's important to note that teeth grinding or chewing during sleep may also cause damage because it causes the top layers of enamel to break down faster than usual. In addition, decreased immunity - either due to an illness like strep throat or flu – will lead to our immune system not fighting off harmful bacteria in our mouth, leading them scrambling for sugar sources resulting in cavities forming after meals.

Treatments for a topical cavity.

Once we have diagnosed a topical cavity, treatment will depend on the extent of damage done to the tooth. Suppose it is caught early enough and only involves the enamel surface of one or two teeth. In that case, restoration may be as easy as applying composite resin fillings that bond directly into place using a special light-activated by your dental professional. However, suppose deeper decay is present in more than half of your enamel layer. Other options are available in that case, such as placing veneers over the top, which requires removing parts of natural teeth before bonding them back together with aesthetic porcelain covering.
