Oral Health Myths About Braces

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Alyce
Oral Health Myths About Braces A pretty smile and straight teeth are all that braces are for. Usually, braces are bulky and unsightly. They are only for teenagers. Do any of these orthodontic misconceptions ring a bell with you? The purpose of this article is to dispel some popular ortho myths and explain why you may benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Myth 1:Braces Only Are Used To Straighten Your Teeth and Give You A Pretty Smile

It's true that having a gorgeous smile is a major benefit of orthodontic treatment, but it's not the only one. There's nothing wrong with getting braces to make your teeth look better. You can do that! The benefits to your oral health go far beyond just straight teeth. Most people's teeth do not meet correctly before braces, which can lead to microbial traps and increase TMJ difficulties. Furthermore, misaligned teeth sustain significantly more damage, such as chipping and wear.

Myth 2:Orthodontic Therapy Means Ugly Braces

The term "orthodontist" conjures up thoughts of uncomfortable nerds in 1980s teen movies, their mouths packed with big metal equipment, even headgear! It's reassuring to hear that this heinous ortho stereotype has vanished. Braces and aligners are the two most common ortho devices nowadays. Braces, as most people understand them, are brackets and wires affixed to the teeth. Unlike traditional braces, brackets now exist in a plethora of styles. Some are even see-through! Braces can be made to be low-profile, and cables can be concealed. Another alternative is to use Invisalign aligners. Orthodontic trays are transparent, detachable trays that replace brackets.

Myth 2: Only Teenagers Can Get Braces

False! Because the bone crest might flex, ortho is typically recommended from a young age. This makes items simpler to move. Even if the denser adult bone slows therapy, you're never too old to wear braces. Ortho is not only frequent, but it is growing more common by the year. As adolescents, most of us got orthodontics. However, our teeth continue to change throughout our lives. Your teeth are likely to be out of position by the age of thirty or forty. At this point, a slew of problems connected with a nasty bite begins to emerge. Chipping on teeth, cold sensitivity, fractures, cracks, TMJ discomfort, headaches, and the list goes on. It's all due to misalignment. As we become older, we notice it more.
