Connections Between Oral Health And Hormonal Changes In Women

Posted on 11/1/2023 by Weo Admin
group of older womenWomen are more prone to problems with oral health due to hormonal changes. This increases their risk of developing dental problems. These hormonal changes affect the blood supply to the gum tissue and the body's response to the toxins released due to plaque formation.

How do hormonal shifts in women manifest, and what signs should they raise red flags?

During puberty, a woman's body produces more feminine hormones, estrogen and progesterone, which may increase blood flow to the gums and alter the tissue's response to bacterial plaque. The onset of puberty is normally between the ages of 10 and 15. The gums get red, become sore and inflamed, and bleed more easily during tooth brushing and flossing. In addition, the hormonal fluctuations that occur throughout the menstrual cycle might cause alterations in the mouth for certain women. Gums may become inflamed and red, salivary glands may swell, canker sores may form, or gums may bleed.

In addition to this, some women report that their periods have changed over time. Gingivitis is often related to menstruation, and it typically begins to show symptoms one to two days before the start of the period. It goes away not long after the period has started. In addition, hormone replacement treatment could help maintain oral health in postmenopausal women. When estrogen medication is administered, the jawbones and the skeleton are protected against bone loss. This supports the concept that postmenopausal women undergoing hormone therapy are less likely to have tooth loss than those without.

What our patients are saying about us
"The first thought that comes to mind for this dental office is "kindness". Perhaps the Kind in Dr. Kindt's name was meant to be! Dr. Kindt and his staff offer the very best in dental care. I recently had extensive cosmetic dental work done and am delighted with the results. The great thing is that people notice my lovely teeth and I get lots of compliments when I smile. I consider Dr. Tim an artist when it comes to dental work. In addition to beautiful work the next best thing is that during hours of extensive work I experienced NO discomfort or pain. The final results combined with the utmost care for my comfort make it easy for me to give this dental office a five star rating." ~ Elaine S.
