Can I Chew Gum With Dentures?

Dentures are an amazing invention of dentistry because they have given many people their smiles back, allowing them to eat whatever they want and smile gloriously. While dentures are fabulous, there are some things you cannot do with dentures.
Historically Speaking...With Dentures
Historians can trace dentures back thousands of years. People made dentures out of nearly any material they could find. Archeologists have found dentures made of wood, animal bones, human bones, and animal and human teeth. There were even dentures made of solid gold or silver inlaid with jewels!
There have been dentures nearly as long as there have been adults who lose teeth. Dentures were created to take the place of missing teeth so adults could eat. Dental care was not nearly as excellent in the past as it is today, so nearly all adults lost their teeth as they aged.
These days, dentures are usually made of porcelain crowns fastened to an acrylic base, so they are light. All dentures are custom-made to fit your gums.
Chewing Gum and Dentures: A Sticky Situation
Chewing gum is a common habit for freshening breath, but for denture wearers, it can be a tricky decision. Traditional gum, especially the sticky, sugary kind, can pose challenges for several reasons.
Adhesion Issues
Regular gum can stick to the dentures and even cause them to dislodge, creating discomfort or embarrassment in social situations.
Residue Buildup
Sticky gums often leave behind residue on dentures, making cleaning more difficult and potentially leading to bad breath or staining over time.
Risk of Breaking the Seal
Many dentures rely on a secure seal to stay in place. Vigorous chewing can break this seal, leading to a loose fit.
Is There Gum Made for Denture Wearers?
Yes! If you're set on chewing gum, there are sugar-free and non-stick options designed for people with dental work, including dentures. These gums are formulated to be less sticky and gentler on dentures. Look for ADA-approved gums that won't interfere with your appliance.
That said, even with denture-safe gum, moderation is key. Over-chewing can put unnecessary pressure on your dentures and gums, which can lead to sore spots or a reduced lifespan of the appliance.
Other Foods to Approach with Caution
While gum is a prime example of food to think twice about, there are other "do's and don'ts" for denture wearers to keep in mind when planning meals:
• |
Sticky or Chewy Foods Avoid: Caramels, toffee, taffy, or anything with a dense, sticky texture. These foods can adhere to dentures and even damage the adhesive or fit. Better Choices: Soft chocolates or sugar-free hard candies that dissolve easily.
|
• |
Hard or Crunchy Foods Avoid: Nuts, popcorn, hard candies, and crunchy snacks like tortilla chips. These can crack or chip your dentures. Better Choices: Soft nuts (like walnuts) or foods like steamed vegetables for that satisfying crunch without the risk.
|
• |
Tough Meats Avoid: Steaks, jerky, or overly chewy cuts of meat. These can be difficult to bite into and wear down your dentures over time. Better Choices: Ground meats, slow-cooked roasts, or fish, which are easier to chew.
|
• |
Foods Requiring a Strong Bite Avoid: Whole apples, raw carrots, or corn on the cob. These require too much force and can shift your dentures. Better Choices: Cut fruits and veggies into small pieces or cook them until soft. Corn can be enjoyed by cutting it off the cob. |
