Can Brushing Be Made Easier When Manual Dexterity Begins to Fade?

Posted on 10/15/2025 by Timothy H. Kindt DDS
An older male patient sitting in a dental chair and consulting with a dentist in a modern clinic about adaptive devices.Maintaining good oral care is essential for overall health, especially as we age. Brushing teeth twice a day helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems. But what happens when manual dexterity starts to fade? For some people, gripping a toothbrush and maneuvering it around their mouth can become a challenge.

The good news is that there are ways to make brushing easier, even when dexterity is limited. Here are a few tips:

Choose the Right Toothbrush: Opt for a toothbrush with a larger handle that is easier to grip. Look for one with a non-slip surface and a comfortable design. Electric toothbrushes can also be a good option, as they do most of the work for you.

Use Adaptive Devices: Several adaptive devices can make brushing easier. These include:

•  Brush holders: These devices attach to the toothbrush handle and provide extra support for your hand.
•  Weighted handles: These handles add weight to the toothbrush, making it easier to control.
•  Floss holders: These holders make it easier to grip and maneuver dental floss.

Modify Your Brushing Technique: If you're having trouble holding the toothbrush, try using a modified grip. You can hold the brush with your palm facing up or down, or even use two hands. Experiment to find what works best for you.

Shorten Your Brushing Time: If brushing for the recommended two minutes is difficult, break it up into shorter sessions. You can brush for one minute in the morning and one minute at night.

Ask for Help: Don't be afraid to ask for help from a family member, caregiver, or dental professional. They can assist you with brushing or provide additional support.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly: Regular dental checkups are essential for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can assess your oral health, provide tips on brushing and flossing, and recommend any necessary treatments.

Remember, even small changes can make a big difference in your oral health. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can continue to brush your teeth effectively and maintain a healthy smile, even as your manual dexterity changes.

What our patients are saying about us
"The first thought that comes to mind for this dental office is "kindness". Perhaps the Kind in Dr. Kindt's name was meant to be! Dr. Kindt and his staff offer the very best in dental care. I recently had extensive cosmetic dental work done and am delighted with the results. The great thing is that people notice my lovely teeth and I get lots of compliments when I smile. I consider Dr. Tim an artist when it comes to dental work. In addition to beautiful work the next best thing is that during hours of extensive work I experienced NO discomfort or pain. The final results combined with the utmost care for my comfort make it easy for me to give this dental office a five star rating." ~ Elaine S.
