Do Canker Sores Damage Your Oral Health?

Posted on 6/13/2018 by Alyce
Canker Sores Timothy H. Kindt, DDS AZ 85205-4078Canker sores can be very annoying. These little sores pop up in your mouth, and while they may not always be painful, sometimes they are. This is especially true if you eat or drink something that irritates them.

Canker sores seem to appear out of nowhere and vanish in about the same way. Most people assume they just have to wait them out. But is that the best idea? Are canker sores dangerous? Do they damage your overall oral health in any way?

What Are They?
Canker sores are technically a type of small ulcer that only appears inside the mouth. They can form on your cheeks, lips, or tongue. They're uncomfortable, and some acidic foods can make them hurt. You can identify a canker sore by its white coloring. Unlike some other types of sores, they're not contagious, nor are they caused by an infection like cold sores are.

Canker sores can affect anyone at any age, but most people deal with them during their teens and early 20s. Women get canker sores about two times as often as men.

What Causes Them?
No one really knows what causes canker sores yet. Research does indicate that there is a connection between eating fruits that are high in citrus and canker sores, though. Eating a lot of sweets also tends to cause canker sores. Being deficient in vitamin B-12 is another related condition.

But Are they Dangerous?
Fortunately, no, they're not dangerous. Canker sores can be annoying and painful at times, but they're not a sign of anything serious unless you suffer from them often. Generally, canker sores only last a couple of weeks, and most people will only deal with one of these sores about five times a year.

If you find that your canker sores last much longer or recur more often, it can indicate that there's something else going on. Call us to set up an appointment so we can investigate.
