How Dental Chips Can Ruin Your Oral Health

Posted on 7/10/2018 by Alyce
How Dental Chips Can Ruin Your Oral HealthWhen you chip a tooth, you may find yourself wondering if it's a big deal. The answer is "yes" because you lose valuable tooth structure, which means the foundation is laid for additional chips and cracks to occur.

If things are too bad, you may even need a root canal, especially if the chip is near the pulp that contains the tooth's nerve.

Why Chipped Teeth are Dangerous

Although a chipped tooth seems like nothing more than a cosmetic issue, they can increase the likelihood of you developing teeth decay and infections. This is because your teeth are protected by a thin layer of enamel that's responsible for keeping bacteria from reaching the sensitive inner part of your tooth. When left untreated your tooth is likely to become infected.

You'll know this has happened because you'll experience a toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold foods, swelling around your tooth, fever, and sharp pain when you chew. These aren't symptoms you should ever experience on a regular basis.

When you don't contact our office immediately about your broken tooth, you could end up with a lot of other problems. Chief among your concerns is infection. It's important to treat this because otherwise it can become life-threatening.

This isn't something that's meant to scare you, but it does help to emphasize how important it is for you to visit our office and have your chipped tooth fixed as soon as you notice it.

Remedying Your Chipped Tooth

We can repair small chips in your tooth by using modern bonding techniques and tooth-colored filling materials. For larger chips we may need to "install" a crown or veneer.

Once you call our office and set up an appointment, we'll be able to properly evaluate what type of treatment will remedy your issue. Call us today so we can get your problem fixed for you as soon as possible.
