![]() Autoclave SterilizationThe American Dental Association recommends use of an autoclave for several types of dental instruments. These include forceps, dental scalers, and the mouth mirrors that help us see the molars in the back of your mouth. To use the autoclave, we put the equipment into a specialized sterilization pouch, which has a clear window on one side. Then, the pouch is put into the autoclave for a specific period of time. The bags are equipped with color indicators, and when they change color, we know that the items inside have been sterilized. This verifies that we never use unsterilized dental tools. Disposable Tools Not all of our tools need to be sterilized because some of them are disposable. We use them once and then throw them out, so sterility isn't an issue. For example, the syringe that squirts water into your mouth has as a replaceable tip, as does the suction tube that removes saliva from your mouth during a cleaning. After we use them during your dental exam, we pop them off and dispose of them. We also follow American Dental Association guidelines when it comes to the use of needles, cotton rolls, and gloves, and we dispose of them safely after each patient. We take pride in maintaining a clean and healthy environment for all of our patients, and we want you to feel comfortable, too. If you have any questions about how we sterilize our tools or keep our exam space clean, please feel free to ask your hygienist. |
