Why You Should Expect to Drool More with a New Set of Dentures

Posted on 5/25/2019 by Alyce
Why You Should Expect to Drool More with a New Set of DenturesWhether it is because of injury or decay, you may be facing the fact that it is time for you to get a set of dentures. One of the things we commonly hear from patrons with new dentures is concern that there is increased drooling when dentures are placed. This is completely normal, although we do recognize it can be an annoying inconvenience while your mouth adjusts to having new dentures.

Increased Saliva Flow

As tempting as it may be to remove your dentures to stop the excessive saliva flow, the first thing we recommend is that you continue wearing them. We recognize that this can be difficult because excessive saliva can be unpleasant, so here are a few tips that can help you get through this transition.

Keep in mind that in the first two or three weeks, your body and mouth are adjusting to dentures and that excessive drool and saliva is completely normal. Just because you are drooling more does not mean that there is a complication. If you continue to have excessive drooling after about three weeks, call our office and we can make sure everything is fitting well in your mouth.

Find some distractions to help you keep your mind off of your new dentures. It may seem a little silly, but the more you think about your new dentures, the more you focus on them. This can increase your anxiety, and this can lead to even more drooling. Relax, breathe and find something to keep your mind off of the dentures.

If you're drooling is extreme, do give us a call as in some cases we can prescribe medication that will help control the drooling. If you have any questions or concerns about your new dentures, please do not hesitate to call our office.

What our patients are saying about us
"The first thought that comes to mind for this dental office is "kindness". Perhaps the Kind in Dr. Kindt's name was meant to be! Dr. Kindt and his staff offer the very best in dental care. I recently had extensive cosmetic dental work done and am delighted with the results. The great thing is that people notice my lovely teeth and I get lots of compliments when I smile. I consider Dr. Tim an artist when it comes to dental work. In addition to beautiful work the next best thing is that during hours of extensive work I experienced NO discomfort or pain. The final results combined with the utmost care for my comfort make it easy for me to give this dental office a five star rating." ~ Elaine S.
