Allergies play a few different roles in conjunction with your oral health. There are allergy issues that can arise at your scheduled dental appointments and procedures. There are issues that can arise from allergies leading you to the dentist chair. Letting us know all allergies you suffer from can be the difference between life-threatening reactions in a dental chair or protecting you from indirect mouth problems allergies cause. Dental Office AllergiesThere are three main allergies we need to know when you visit our office. The first is when you have any latex allergy. This can cause hives, itching, tightness in the throat, and difficulty breathing when you come in contact with some dental gloves. Next, if you have any known allergies to anesthetics. You can have reactions to the actual anesthesia or the preservatives in them. Contact dermatitis from ingredients in dental bonding or porcelain can cause redness, swelling, and gum irritation. Dental dams containing rubber can cause reactions around the mouth. If you know of these, let our staff know. Seasonal Allergies Affecting Your Oral HealthRagweed, Pollen, Mold, spores, and dust mites are just a few of the aggressors throughout the year that can cause allergies. On their own, they don't affect your teeth much; it's their side effects to look out for. Dry mouth is very common when your nose is clogged up. Consistent dry mouth puts your teeth at a much higher risk for cavities due to the lack of saliva to protect them. Allergies can cause tooth pain. When your sinuses are compacted it puts pressure on our tooth roots. The increase in bacteria that comes with a nasal drip can quickly lead to bad breath. To protect your mouth, take antihistamines, drink plenty of water, use a humidifier at home when you sleep. By being transparent with us at every visit about allergies new and old, we can maintain a safe, healthy, and effective dental practice to help with all your needs. If you have further questions, please contact us today, we are here for your oral health care. |
