How Your Dental Health Affects the Rest of Your Body

How Your Dental Health Affects the Rest of Your Body

Normally, people don't link dental health with the other parts of their body. After all, there is a reason why a dental clinic and a dental clinic are separate; our mouths are complex and require special care. Due to this, it is easy to not think about the effects that a dental infection or actions that affect your mouth can have on other parts of your body.

Periodontitis and Diabetes

There is a substantial link between periodontal disease and diabetes. Periodontal disease causes inflammation in the gums which in turn reduces your body's ability to keep blood sugar levels under control. On the flip side, high blood sugar makes it easier for infections in the mouth to both start and spread. In summary, periodontitis, and diabetes work together to help each other become more hostile to your body.

Poor Diet Affects Both Dental and Physical Health

What you eat affects your dental health substantially. A person that almost lives off of junk food will have healthier teeth than someone who gets all their nutrients in a day while keeping sugar and sodium levels low. The same applies to your body as well. Healthy eating promotes increased energy, healthy weight, and strong teeth and bones.

Smoking Also Affects Your Mouth and Body

Smoking is considered a big no-no in both the dental and medical world because it negatively affects both aspects of your body. The chemicals in tobacco put you at 5 times the risk of developing oral cancer. Smoking tobacco also stains your teeth, causes bad breath, harms your lungs, and lastly, the nicotine in a cigarette narrows the arteries and increases blood pressure, putting you at risk of a potential heart attack. It is something you definitely want to try to stop doing if you are a smoker. It may not be easy, but if you get the help you need, we believe you can do it!
