What Makes Some Toothbrushes Better Than Others?

Posted on 5/10/2021 by Alyce
What Makes Some Toothbrushes Better Than Others? Not all toothbrushes are the same. Though they may look the same, some are best suited for use than others. To maintain good oral hygiene, which is especially important for your dental health and general well-being, you need to have the right toothbrush. Here is what makes some toothbrushes better than others.

The Bristles

Whether you choose to use a manual or electric toothbrush, you need to pay close attention to the bristle pattern and hardness. Toothbrushes have soft, medium, or hard bristles. Soft bristles are ideal, especially if you have sensitive teeth or gum disease or you brush your teeth vigorously. If you have plaque build-up around your teeth, you may consider getting a toothbrush with medium bristles but be careful not to use a lot of force when brushing your teeth. Avoid toothbrushes with hard bristles because they can damage the root surface, protective tooth enamel, and gums. For increased protection, use a toothbrush with rounded tips.

Size

The right toothbrush should give you easy access to the surfaces of your teeth and gums. The ideal toothbrush head for adults should be a half-inch wide and one-inch tall. This makes it effective in cleaning your teeth and is also easy to use. Toothbrushes with larger heads are challenging to maneuver, making it difficult to clean hard to reach areas like the backs of your molars and the sides.

Handle Design

While you need to have a toothbrush with a long handle to ensure you reach the back of your mouth, the handle's design is also important. There are three different handle designs to choose from: flexible, no-slip grip, straight, and contra-angle. Choose a thin enough toothbrush to fit in your hand and mouth and one you can hold comfortably. If the handle is thick, you may not be able to reach your molars.
