What Is a Head and Neck Exam?

Posted on 10/24/2022 by Alyce
What Is a Head and Neck Exam?Your risk of oral cancer is assessed during a head and neck examination. Our dentist will examine your head, jaw, and neck during your appointment to look for any anomalies, such as color changes, lumps, or lesions. This brief and painless test can provide you with long-lasting peace of mind while playing a significant role in cancer prevention.

What is The Importance of a Head and Neck Exam?

Every six months, head and neck checks should be performed to look for any early indications of oral cancer. The likelihood of survival following treatment increases with the timing of the diagnosis. Although it can arise at any age, oral cancer often affects adults over the age of 45. Sores, lumps, white or red spots, swelling, sore throats, and pain when chewing or swallowing are all indications of oral cancer.

How Is a Head and Neck Exam Performed?

Our dentist will initially check your neck, thyroid, thyroid, and nose while you are seated. He or she will feel the side of the neck and the area beneath your jaw with both hands to check for any indications of malignancy. Your mouth will then be opened by our dentist so they may examine the tissues inside, such as the tongue, tonsils, and back of the throat. To check for any indications of swelling or unusual color or texture, he or she will ask you to stick out your tongue. In order to check for lumps or sensitivity, our dentist may also softly press on the inside of your lips and cheeks and feel the floor and roof of your mouth.

Our dentist will do a head and neck examination during your consultation and make suggestions for reducing your overall risk of mouth cancer. Make an appointment with our dentist today to have your routine checkup.
