Cleanings and Exams

Your mouth performs numerous essential functions every single day. To perform these jobs properly, your mouth needs to be healthy. A big part of maintaining your oral health is taking care of it at home. The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once a day, every day. While these steps are integral in preventing issues such as cavities and gum disease, they are only part of a larger picture. To maintain optimal oral health, the ADA also recommends that you have two dental visits every year for cleanings and exams. At Timothy H. Kindt, DDS, we can perform these routine cleanings and exams, helping you to maintain the health of your mouth.

Dental Cleanings

Throughout the course of the day, plaque and bacteria build up in your mouth. While naturally occurring, an abundance of either of these or both can lead to cavities and gum disease. Regular brushing and flossing are essential for removing the buildup that accumulates in your mouth. However, even if you follow the ADA guidelines, it is still possible to develop issues. This is because there are often areas in the mouth that are harder to access, and therefore do not get properly cleaned, or even cleaned at all. As a result, plaque and bacteria continue to accumulate in these areas.

With specialized tools we can remove even the most stubborn plaque, tartar, bacteria and other debris from your teeth, enabling us to further aid in keeping your teeth healthy. We begin your cleaning by using a tool designed to scrape the buildup from your teeth. Every surface of the teeth is carefully gone over. After the teeth have been scraped, they are polished. This involves the use of an electric handpiece with a rotating head and a dental polish that contains abrasives. Finally, the teeth are flossed. Flossing helps to remove any buildup from between your teeth that may have been missed as well as remove any debris that may have accumulated during your cleaning. We can also provide you with a fluoride treatment if necessary.

Exams are done in the same visit as your cleanings. They are done to check the overall condition of your mouth and look for signs of any potential issues that you might miss at home. Many oral health issues do not present any symptoms in their earliest stages. If they do, they are often barely noticeable and therefore ignored. The longer issues go untreated, the more invasive the necessary treatments become. By spotting issues in their early stages, we can help you get the treatments you need to prevent them from growing worse.

A major part of your exam is the visual evaluation of your mouth. We look closely at your oral structures, including your teeth, your gums, and your other oral tissues. We inspect the teeth for signs of damage and decay. The gums are inspected for signs of infections and other issues. The oral tissues are checked for abnormalities. After we have looked at your mouth, we will discuss any issues that we may have found and what your treatment options are. We will ask you questions about your oral health and lifestyle habits and can provide tips on how to improve the health of your mouth. We will also be able to answer any questions that you may have.

Another important part of your oral exam, which is not done at every visit, is dental X-rays. X-rays are a critical part of your oral healthcare file. They allow us to see the hidden structures of your mouth, including between the teeth and under the gums. Not only can we spot potential issues, but we can also monitor the development of the teeth and jaws, follow bone loss, and monitor the progress of your healing following specific procedures. Dental X-rays help to provide us with a complete picture of your mouth so that we can provide you with the personalized care you need.

When done in conjunction with regular oral care at home, professional cleanings and exams can help you to keep your mouth healthy. For more information, or to schedule your next dental cleaning and exam, call Timothy H. Kindt, DDS, today at (480) 939-5818.
